Artist Statement
I am fascinated by the human experience and I often enjoy capturing candid moments in people's lives in my work. Even though a photograph is essentially doing the same as this, I personally find that the process of transcribing that photograph or in-person encounter onto the canvas through oil painting allows me to process the emotions or thoughts that I may feel towards these moments and the people partaking in them. The photos that I use are based on either the composition, the color palettes, or by the memories that they hold (sometimes a combination of all three of these things). At times I also use art as a way to express my gratitude, appreciation, affection, and/or admiration for the ones that I am depicting in my work; paint becomes an intermediary between the world and me. When I'm painting these scenes and moments I'm breathing life into my work. I'm depicting my truth of that memory or moment. My brushstrokes express my emotions, while the photographs are viewed from an analytical point of view and as a result my work becomes topographical. The viewer should be able to comprehend or get a sense of what I may have feeling towards these particular moments.
